Led by Soeren Palumbo and Timbo Shriver (son of Special Olympics Chairman Timothy Shriver), the campaign evolved out of a united passion to promote the positive contributions people with IDD make in communities around the world. The Spread the Word to End the Word grassroots campaign was created in February 2009 by youth who participated in the Special Olympics Global Youth Activation Summit, held in conjunction with the Special Olympics World Winter Games in Idaho. Eliminating the use of this word is a step toward respect for all. Use of the R-word, “retard” or “retarded,” is hurtful and painful and, whether intended or not, is a form of bullying. Just witness the barrage of hate-filled phone messages and e-mails - much of it unprintable - that descended on Town Hall, the Chamber of Commerce, The Eagle and no doubt the Selectmen themselves. The segment accomplished what it intended - to "Reilly" up the faithful. The "Merry" part has pagan origins, meaning "pleasure," and "Christmas," which comes directly from "Christ's Mass," is solidly rooted in Catholicism whereas the word, "holiday," that O'Reilly finds so objectionable, derives from the sacred phrase, "Holy Day." Take the phrase "Merry Christmas," for example, held so sacrosanct by O'Reilly and his mostly Protestant adherents. O'Reilly's so-called "War on Christmas" is filled with ironies. instead of midnight - the one actual "newsworthy item" that Bill O'Reilly and company somehow failed to report - represents the latest attack on Christmas and Christians. Apparently, the Selectmen's decision to turn off the town's holiday lights at 10 p.m. ![]() Of course, "fair and balanced" Fox News has never concerned itself with facts, be they historical or otherwise, as it once again demonstrated by its one-sided and grossly distorted "reporting" on a local non-issue. ![]() ![]() I'm sure that it never would have occurred to William Stanley, when he electrified Great Barrington's main street way back in 1886, that the town would one day make national news for having too few lights downtown.
